Compare this to the person who works only as a matter of survival. Whose only concern with work is getting enough money to pay the bills. When she thinks of work she thinks of spending all her energy doing a job that she doesn’t really care about. Without realizing it her face tightens and she frowns.
Now consider both of these people working in the same environment. Much of what affects each person’s beliefs about the situation is her belief about her choices and the ability to set and achieve goals. These beliefs become a self fulfilling prophecy. As the person’s features harden people respond to those features. The permanent scowl and negativity does little to engage the very people who could open doors to a better future. The bright personality and friendly smile attracts a positive response for all. Each person ends up finding exactly what they were expecting.
For some, involvement in recovery is simply a task they must perform. Their only goal is to meet the minimum requirements to insure remission from their particular disease. But for those who have a dream of something better, recovery is an exciting adventure. We seldom are able to chose our circumstances, only how we react to them.
